Louis Watkins, Indiana
|
This is a story told by Louis Watkins's daughter, Hettie, about her father, Louis. Louis was treated pretty good, compared to others. His master was nice to him and the overseer never whipped him. On Sundays, he was glowed to go to church with his parents. A tutor came to teach the slaves and they were encouraged and taught to read and write, until to their limits. They were treated very nicely, given good clothes, fed and housed. Once the master finished his food, the slaves were brought to a dining room where they served the meal. No slave was ever sold off of the plantation at all. Once Louis was free, his parents were told that they can stay to work a job with wages or they could go somewhere else. They stayed while others went to adjoining villages and towns to get jobs.
